The Phantom Stranger #8

The Phantom Stranger number eight was published by DC Comics in the summer of 1970 as part of the character's second solo series. This era of the series served as a bridge between the supernatural anthology format of the 1950s and the more narrative-driven horror comics that defined the early 1970s. The issue features writing by Robert Kanigher and artwork by Neal Adams, who was instrumental in grounding the enigmatic, wandering mystic in a more contemporary and haunting visual style.

Neal Adams' contribution to this issue is frequently cited by collectors for its atmospheric tension and the departure from the stiffer comic illustration styles of the previous decade. His work on the title helped solidify the Phantom Stranger's place as a cornerstone of DC's burgeoning supernatural corner of their universe. The story and art were received as a successful effort to give a previously abstract character a more defined and melancholic persona, establishing the tone for his later appearances alongside the Justice League.
