The Punisher: War Zone #22

The Punisher: War Zone, launched in 1992, was designed to capitalize on the character's immense popularity during the early 1990s comics boom. As the third ongoing monthly title featuring Frank Castle, this series leaned into a more cinematic, action-oriented aesthetic, often utilizing high-quality paper and experimental cover treatments to distinguish itself from the more grounded narratives found in the flagship Punisher series.

Issue #22, published in late 1993, belongs to a period of transition for Marvel's adult-oriented line. The series was characterized by its gritty, street-level depiction of New York City and its emphasis on heavy tactical weaponry. While the series was eventually cancelled as the mid-90s market correction set in, it remains a quintessential example of the aesthetic trends of its era, favored by collectors for its distinct visual style and reflection of the darker tone popular in the early 90s comic industry.
