The Question Omnibus by Dennis O'Neil and Denys Cowan #1

The Question Omnibus collects the seminal 1986 series written by Dennis O'Neil and illustrated by Denys Cowan. Following the character's reinvention in the wake of the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' event, the series was designed to move away from traditional superhero tropes, instead exploring philosophical, political, and urban themes in the fictional Hub City. O'Neil utilized the protagonist, Vic Sage, as a conduit for his interest in Zen Buddhism and social commentary, crafting a noir-inspired detective story that challenged the morality of the justice system.

Denys Cowan's gritty, expressive visual style was essential to the title's identity, providing a stark contrast to the polished aesthetic typical of mainstream comics at the time. His work on the series is widely regarded as a high point of 1980s industry experimentation, earning critical acclaim for its atmosphere and character depth. By grounding the narrative in a decaying, cynical environment, O'Neil and Cowan produced a character study that has remained a touchstone for readers interested in mature, character-driven serialized fiction.
