The Sandman #47

The Sandman number 47, titled 'The Kindly Ones: Part 1', was published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in 1993. As the opening chapter of the penultimate story arc of Neil Gaiman’s seminal series, it marked a significant shift in tone and narrative scope, moving toward the conclusion of Morpheus’s long-standing journey. The issue set the stage for the climactic confrontation, focusing on the encroaching forces that would ultimately define the fate of the protagonist.

The cover art was created by Dave McKean, whose distinctive mixed-media style became synonymous with the series' aesthetic. McKean utilized a combination of photography, painting, and found objects to reflect the dreamlike and often haunting nature of Gaiman’s writing. Upon its release, the issue was well-received for its atmospheric storytelling and for successfully escalating the tension of the overall saga, further solidifying the series' status as a cornerstone of modern literary comics.
