Where it came from
Published in June 1992, The Spectacular Spider-Man #189 serves as a key installment in the Harry Osborn Green Goblin arc. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with artwork by Sal Buscema, the issue navigates the intense psychological unraveling of Harry Osborn as he fully embraces his father's mantle. This period of the series is noted for its focus on character-driven melodrama and the heavy emotional toll of the Spider-Man mythos, moving away from simple villainy to explore themes of generational trauma and addiction.
Sal Buscema, a prolific artist synonymous with the Spider-Man titles of this era, employed his signature kinetic style to capture the domestic tension and frantic energy of the narrative. The cover and interior panels are lauded for their expressionistic depiction of Harry's descent into madness. Critics and long-time readers often cite this arc as the definitive conclusion to the conflict between Peter Parker and his best friend, marking a pivotal shift in the wider Spider-Man continuity during the early nineties.
