Where it came from
Published in January 1983, The Uncanny X-Men #165 was crafted during the celebrated tenure of writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum. This issue serves as a pivotal chapter in the aftermath of the Brood Saga, focusing on the character Carol Danvers, formerly known as Ms. Marvel, as she undergoes a transformation into the cosmic entity Binary. The narrative reflects Claremont's signature approach of blending high-stakes space opera with the personal psychological struggles of the X-Men characters, grounding alien encounters in human emotion.
Dave Cockrum’s visual direction for this era played a significant role in establishing the modern aesthetic of the X-Men. His design for Binary remains one of the most iconic transformations in the title's history, balancing vibrant, cosmic imagery with the grounded, gritty atmosphere of the X-Mansion setting. The issue was well-received by readers of the time for its bold character evolution and its contribution to the expanded cosmic lore of the Marvel Universe, cementing its place as a classic installment in the long-running series.
