Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #177, titled 'Sanctuary,' was published in January 1984 as part of the long-running Marvel Comics series. Written by Chris Claremont with art by John Romita Jr. and inker Dan Green, this issue serves as a poignant moment in the X-Men mythos, focusing on the team's emotional recovery following the wedding of Storm and Forge, and the recurring theme of Xavier’s school as a refuge for the outcast.
The design and narrative tone of this era were heavily influenced by Claremont’s character-driven storytelling, which prioritized the interpersonal struggles of the mutants over traditional heroics. John Romita Jr.'s distinctive, angular linework during this period helped define the aesthetic of the 1980s X-Men, moving away from the more classical superhero style to a grittier, more expressive visual language that resonated with readers of the time.
