The Uncanny X-Men #197

Published in September 1985, The Uncanny X-Men #197 arrived during a period of high creative stability for the title under writer Chris Claremont. The issue serves as a mid-arc moment within the long-running narrative, following the aftermath of the team's public perception struggles and the lingering tension regarding Professor Xavier's leadership. It features the team dealing with the encroaching threats of the era, reflecting the complex, soap-opera-infused superhero storytelling that defined Claremont's seventeen-year tenure on the book.

The interior art was provided by John Romita Jr., whose gritty, expressive style began to replace the more traditional aesthetic that previously defined the series. His collaboration with inker Dan Green helped establish a moody, grounded look for the X-Men during the mid-eighties. The cover, illustrated by Romita Jr. and Green, captures the high-stakes, team-oriented drama the series was known for, emphasizing the interpersonal dynamics and tactical challenges that continued to resonate with a growing base of mature comic book readers.
