The Uncanny X-Men #222

Published in 1987, The Uncanny X-Men #222 represents a pivotal moment during the series' influential run written by Chris Claremont. At this stage in the publication history, the team was navigating the aftermath of the Mutant Massacre, and the issue focuses on the confrontation between Wolverine and his rival Sabretooth. It is a quintessential example of the darker, more character-driven storytelling that defined the X-Men throughout the late eighties, balancing intense action with the evolving psychological profiles of its ensemble cast.

The cover art and interior illustrations for this era are synonymous with the work of Marc Silvestri, who brought a gritty, dynamic aesthetic to the title that resonated deeply with the fan base at the time. His artistic direction favored high-tension panels and expressive character designs that helped maintain the series' status as the flagship title for Marvel Comics. The issue remains a significant collector item due to its role in expanding the lore surrounding Wolverine’s past and its enduring representation of the classic X-Men creative team's vision.
