Where it came from
Published in July 1988 by Marvel Comics, The Uncanny X-Men #231 represents a significant chapter in the 'Fall of the Mutants' era. Written by Chris Claremont with interior art by Marc Silvestri, the issue captures the team during a period of profound transition and psychological tension, as they navigated life in the Australian Outback while presumed dead by the world at large.
The cover art, illustrated by Marc Silvestri and Dan Green, is recognized for its moody, gritty aesthetic that mirrors the tone of the late eighties X-Men run. Claremont’s narrative, characterized by dense character work and intricate subplots, sought to deconstruct the X-Men's heroic status. The issue was received as a quintessential example of the dark, high-stakes storytelling that defined Claremont's lengthy tenure on the title.
