Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #248, published in September 1989, arrived during a transitional period for the X-Men franchise as the team began to splinter across global locations following the events of the Fall of the Mutants. Written by Chris Claremont with interior art by Jim Lee, the issue centers on the character Dazzler and her conflict with the mutant thief Gambit, who was making one of his earliest appearances in the series at the time.
The design and aesthetic of this period were heavily influenced by Jim Lee’s developing style, which helped define the look of the X-Men for the 1990s. The issue is noted for its contribution to the expanded mythology of the Thieves Guild and the ongoing character development of Gambit, whose mysterious persona became a central draw for readers throughout the late eighties and early nineties.
