The Uncanny X-Men #497

The Uncanny X-Men #497, published in 2008, represents a transitional moment in the X-Men mythos following the dramatic events of the Messiah Complex crossover. In this era, the creative team sought to navigate the team's fractured state and the scarcity of the mutant population, with Ed Brubaker steering the narrative toward a more espionage-focused direction. This particular issue continues the 'Divided We Stand' storyline, exploring the aftermath of the team's disbandment and the personal toll taken on iconic characters like Cyclops and Wolverine.

The interior artwork for this issue was provided by Michael Choi, whose distinct, painterly digital style defined the aesthetic of this period for the title. Choi’s approach was often praised for its cinematic lighting and heavy reliance on atmospheric detail, intended to ground the high-concept superhero action in a grittier, more grounded reality. While critical reception to the pacing of the post-Messiah Complex issues was varied, the visual presentation remained a notable stylistic departure from the traditional comic book illustration of the time.
