The Unexpected #157

The Unexpected #157, published by DC Comics in March 1975, emerged during a transitional period for the publisher's long-running anthology series. Originally established in the late 1960s, the title was part of a stable of supernatural and suspense-themed comics that defined DC's horror output following the easing of the Comics Code Authority restrictions. By the mid-1970s, these titles often leaned into gothic atmospheres and morality-play narratives, aiming to satisfy a readership that appreciated the creeping dread typical of the era's pulp-inspired storytelling.

This specific issue features work by creators such as Jack Oleck, whose scripts were central to the series' tone of dark irony and twist endings. The art team utilized a style consistent with DC's mid-decade 'house style,' which prioritized clear, dramatic panels that could convey supernatural elements without sacrificing readability. The issue is widely regarded by collectors as a quintessential example of the bronze-age anthology format, appreciated primarily for its commitment to the eerie aesthetic that characterized the title throughout its decade-long run.
