Tom and Jerry #216

Published in 1965 by Gold Key Comics, Tom and Jerry number 216 stands as a quintessential artifact of the long-running Western Publishing tenure. By the mid-1960s, the comic book adaptations of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animated shorts had shifted from the Dell Comics era to the Gold Key imprint, maintaining the slapstick, dialogue-light aesthetic that defined the cat-and-mouse duo's enduring cultural footprint. These issues were designed to appeal to a broad demographic of young readers, relying on kinetic visual gags and the familiar dynamics established by Hanna and Barbera.

The illustrations for this period of the series were handled by a revolving group of talented house artists and freelancers who were tasked with translating high-velocity animation cels into static, sequential panels. These creators focused on maintaining the iconic character models while exploring episodic, standalone narratives that preserved the humor of the original cartoons. The issue was received as standard-fare children's entertainment, valued primarily for its accessibility and the consistent, reliable charm of the iconic characters during a transitional period for comic distribution.
