Where it came from
Tom Strong #9 was published by America's Best Comics, an imprint of WildStorm, in 2000. It serves as a central chapter in the superhero series created by Alan Moore and artist Chris Sprouse, which pays homage to the pulp fiction and science adventure heroes of the early 20th century. The series was designed to deconstruct and celebrate the tropes of the Silver and Golden Ages of comics through a meta-textual, intellectual lens.
The issue features artwork by Chris Sprouse and Al Gordon, who were instrumental in establishing the clean, definitive aesthetic that defined the series. Their work aimed to evoke the clarity of classic adventure strips while maintaining modern storytelling sensibilities. The title was widely praised by critics for its optimistic tone and structural ingenuity, solidifying Moore and Sprouse’s reputation for crafting high-concept narratives that remained accessible to readers of all backgrounds.
