Tsuge Yoshiharu: Gensō Kaii Kitan Shūsei #1

Gensō Kaii Kitan Shūsei (Collected Tales of Fantasy and Mystery) is a curation of works by Yoshiharu Tsuge, the influential manga artist who pioneered the gekiga movement and the introspective autobiographical style known as watakushi-manga. This volume compiles surreal, dream-like narratives that characterize Tsuge's transition away from traditional genre manga in the mid-1960s, a period defined by his deep engagement with avant-garde aesthetics and psychological existentialism.

The editorial selection highlights Tsuge's masterful use of ink wash techniques and minimalist paneling to evoke a sense of uncanny detachment. These stories, originally appearing in underground magazines like Garo, were instrumental in elevating the medium of manga to a literary art form. The series was designed to showcase his unique ability to blend the mundane reality of postwar Japan with haunting, otherworldly visions, and it remains highly regarded by scholars for its profound influence on contemporary literary comics.
