Where it came from
Ultimate X-Men #39 was published in 2004 as part of Marvel Comics' Ultimate line, an initiative designed to modernize and reboot iconic characters for a new generation of readers. This specific issue features the beginning of the 'Magnetic North' story arc, written by Brian Michael Bendis with interior art by David Finch. The Ultimate line sought to strip away decades of complicated continuity, providing a streamlined and often grittier take on the X-Men’s origins and societal role.
The creative direction for this series emphasized a more cinematic, contemporary tone, reflecting the visual style of the early 2000s X-Men films. David Finch’s artwork in this era is frequently noted for its sharp, detailed linework and dynamic panel layouts. Upon its release, the issue was generally received as a pivotal moment in the series, helping to solidify the volatile relationship between the X-Men and Magneto within the reimagined Ultimate Marvel Universe.
