Umineko no Naku Koro ni #2

Umineko no Naku Koro ni, or When the Seagulls Cry, was originally developed as a sound novel by 07th Expansion, with the second installment released in late 2007. As a mystery series following the Ushiromiya family on the isolated island of Rokkenjima, the narrative structure intentionally deconstructs the whodunnit genre, blending gothic horror with complex logical puzzles. The second release expanded upon the foundations laid by the first, deepening the meta-fictional conflict between the protagonist Battler and the witch Beatrice.

The character designs and illustrations were produced by Ryukishi07, the primary writer and artist for the series. His distinct, idiosyncratic art style became a signature element of the 07th Expansion titles, often polarized by critics for its lack of traditional technical polish but widely praised for its ability to convey profound emotional tension and atmospheric unease. The second issue was well received by the visual novel community for solidifying the series' intricate rules of magic versus logic, cementing its reputation as a cult classic of the psychological mystery genre.
