Usagi Yojimbo #35

Usagi Yojimbo #35 was published in 1991 during the series' tenure with Fantagraphics Books. The issue serves as part of the 'Cycles' storyline, a significant narrative arc that showcases creator Stan Sakai's meticulous approach to blending anthropomorphic characters with the historical aesthetics of Edo-period Japan. Sakai wrote and illustrated the issue, utilizing a clean, brush-heavy ink style inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints and his own deep study of samurai cinema.

The comic reflects a period in the late 1980s and early 1990s when independent comics were experiencing a creative surge, allowing Sakai to build a dense, multi-layered mythology for Miyamoto Usagi. At the time of its release, the series was well-regarded by critics for its balance of lighthearted adventure and somber, character-driven storytelling, cementing Sakai's reputation as a master of pacing and sequential narrative clarity within the small-press landscape.
