Usagi Yojimbo: Kaitō '84 #4

Usagi Yojimbo: Kaitō '84 is a pivotal fan-made zine project produced by Stan Sakai in 1984, long before the character's mainstream professional debut. Created while Sakai was working as a letterer for Marvel Comics, these early issues served as a creative testing ground where he developed the ronin rabbit's world, character design, and the synthesis of historical samurai cinema with anthropomorphic storytelling.

The series is noted for its raw, experimental aesthetic, showcasing Sakai’s initial artistic vision before the refinement seen in the later Dark Horse Comics runs. It emerged from the vibrant 1980s independent fanzine scene, designed primarily to share his passion for Japanese folklore and adventure with fellow enthusiasts. Because these issues were limited-run amateur publications, they are now considered foundational artifacts in the history of independent comics.
