Where it came from
Vampire Tales #4 was published by Marvel Comics in April 1974 as part of the company's Curiosities line, which featured black-and-white horror magazines aimed at a more mature audience. This format allowed the publisher to bypass the restrictive Comics Code Authority, enabling more graphic storytelling and complex themes that were trending in the 1970s horror revival.
The issue is particularly noted for its contribution to the ongoing Morbius the Living Vampire saga, featuring creative work by writer Doug Moench and artist Rich Buckler. The design reflects the pulp-inspired aesthetic of the era, balancing atmospheric, ink-heavy illustrations with the moody, gothic narrative style that defined the magazine's approach to anti-hero character development.
