Vampiress Carmilla #33

Vampiress Carmilla was an independent horror comic series published by Eternity Comics, an imprint of Malibu Comics, during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The character was inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic 1872 gothic novella, reimagined for the modern comic book format to capitalize on the underground horror comic boom of the era. The series leaned heavily into the campy, eroticized aesthetic common to independent horror titles of the time, focusing on themes of ancient vampirism set against contemporary urban backdrops.

Issue #33 arrived during the later stages of the series' run, which maintained a dedicated cult following despite being produced on a modest budget compared to mainstream superhero titles. Like much of the series, the visual style relied on the distinct, dramatic ink-heavy illustration techniques favored by independent horror artists of the period. While the series did not achieve the widespread critical acclaim of major publisher horror anthologies, it remains a notable example of the niche, independent black-and-white comic book movement that flourished before the industry consolidation of the mid-1990s.
