Where it came from
Vamps: Pumpkin Time #1 was published by Vertigo, a mature readers imprint of DC Comics, in 1998. This three-issue miniseries served as a direct sequel to the 1994 Vamps series, continuing the story of a group of female vampires who escaped from their sadistic creator. The series emerged during a period when Vertigo was gaining critical acclaim for dark, unconventional takes on horror and urban fantasy tropes.
The series was written by Elaine Lee and illustrated by William Simpson. Lee and Simpson leaned into a stylized, gothic-punk aesthetic that was characteristic of the imprint’s mid-nineties output. The narrative focused on themes of autonomy and rebellion within a supernatural framework, and it was generally well-received by fans of the dark fantasy genre who appreciated the character-driven approach to vampire folklore.
