Venom: Carnage Unleashed #1

Released in 1995 as the start of a four-issue limited series, Venom: Carnage Unleashed emerged during a period of intense popularity for the Venom character within Marvel Comics. The story follows Eddie Brock as he enters a virtual reality combat game based on his own history, only to find the villain Carnage has infiltrated the game's network to wreak havoc in the physical world. This high-concept premise reflected the era's fascination with burgeoning digital technologies and the dark, edgy aesthetic that dominated mid-nineties comic books.

The series was written by Larry Hama, a veteran comic writer known for his influential work on G.I. Joe, with artwork provided by Andrew Wildman. Their collaboration aimed to lean into the visceral, chaotic nature of the symbiote characters while utilizing a video game-inspired narrative structure. While the series served as a showcase for the visceral art style common to the period, it is primarily remembered by fans as a quintessential example of the 1990s symbiote craze that pushed Venom from a traditional antagonist toward his role as a lethal protector.
