Venom: Lethal Protector #5

Released in 1993, Venom: Lethal Protector #5 served as the concluding chapter of the character's first-ever self-titled limited series. The series was designed to transition Venom from a recurring Spider-Man antagonist into a standalone anti-hero, shifting the narrative focus to his activities in San Francisco. This creative pivot was intended to capitalize on the character's immense popularity among readers during the early 1990s, establishing the moral ambiguity that would define the character for decades to come.

The issue features scripts by David Michelinie and illustrations by Mark Bagley, a duo synonymous with the classic 90s aesthetic of the Spider-Man family of titles. Bagley’s character designs, characterized by exaggerated proportions and dynamic, webbing-heavy action sequences, were instrumental in codifying Venom's signature look for a generation of fans. The series was met with significant commercial success, effectively launching a long-running franchise that solidified Venom's position as one of Marvel's most iconic figures.
