Where it came from
Watashi wa Kabe ni Naritai, or I Want to Be a Wall, is a manga series by Honami Hashinokuchi that debuted in the early 2020s. The narrative explores the unique perspective of a young woman who, feeling socially overwhelmed, fantasizes about becoming a wall to observe her idol and their spouse from a distance. The third volume continues this exploration of fan culture and parasocial relationships, presenting the protagonist's internal struggle with humor and empathy.
The series is celebrated for its distinctive visual style and its lighthearted approach to the complexities of fandom. Hashinokuchi’s character designs are noted for their expressive clarity, balancing the absurdity of the premise with grounded emotional beats. The work has been well-received by readers for its refreshing take on the 'fangirl' archetype, moving away from tropes to offer a nuanced look at how one finds comfort and identity within the objects of their admiration.
