Where it came from
Werewolf by Night #40 was published by Marvel Comics in 1976 as part of a wave of horror-themed titles that flourished during the 1970s. This period of comic book history saw the relaxation of the Comics Code Authority, allowing publishers to reintroduce supernatural characters like Jack Russell, a man cursed with lycanthropy, who first debuted in 1972.
The issue features cover art and interior work characteristic of the era's gothic sensibilities, intended to blend superhero action with traditional horror tropes. Like many issues in the latter half of the series, it reflects the creative challenges of maintaining a niche supernatural character as the popularity of monster-centric titles began to wane toward the end of the decade.
