Whisper #17

Whisper #17 was published in 1987 as part of the Whisper series, a long-running independent comic title created by Steven Grant and Norm Breyfogle for First Comics. The series was notable for its neo-noir aesthetic and its departure from standard superhero tropes, focusing instead on the complex, morally grey life of an international assassin named Whisper. Coming out of the mid-1980s independent comics boom, the title was designed to appeal to readers looking for more grounded, character-driven storytelling with a sophisticated visual tone.

The art and narrative approach for Whisper #17 reflected the ongoing creative evolution of the series, which sought to balance pulp-style espionage thrills with deeper thematic character development. Norm Breyfogle’s clean, energetic lines were a defining feature of the book's look, helping the series gain a dedicated cult following among readers who appreciated the darker, cinematic style that was becoming increasingly prevalent in late-eighties comic art.
