Wildcats Version 3.0 #17

Wildcats Version 3.0 was launched in 2002 as a flagship title for DC Comics' WildStorm imprint, intended to modernize the franchise by grounding the superhero team in a realistic, corporate-driven world. Written by Joe Casey and featuring the distinct, sharp-lined art style of Dustin Nguyen, the series traded spandex-clad heroics for themes of media manipulation, global branding, and the moral ambiguity of high-tech capitalism. This particular approach was a deliberate departure from the 1990s image-heavy aesthetic of the original WildC.A.T.s, aiming to engage a more mature readership interested in character development and political satire.

Issue #17 continues the narrative arc where the team operates as a covert corporate entity, focusing on the team's internal power struggles and the evolving persona of Grifter. By this point in the series, Dustin Nguyen’s work had become synonymous with the book's sleek, futuristic visual identity, which favored moody lighting and clinical, modern environments. The title was received critically as a bold experiment in superhero deconstruction, praised for its willingness to challenge the genre's tropes, though it remains a niche artifact of the early 2000s transition period for independent superhero comics.
