Where it came from
X-Factor #126, published in July 1996, arrived during a tumultuous period for Marvel's mutant titles following the company-wide Age of Apocalypse event. As the series grappled with the fallout of the Onslaught crossover, the creative team sought to evolve the dynamic of the government-sanctioned team, focusing on the complex interpersonal relationships and ideological shifts among the core roster of X-Factor members.
The issue features a script by Howard Mackie and interior art by Jeff Matsuda. This era of the series is noted for its transition toward a grittier aesthetic that mirrored mid-90s comic book trends, balancing high-stakes superhero action with the internal soap-opera elements that defined the X-Men franchise. It remains a notable chapter for fans of the mid-90s 'X-Factor' iteration before the title underwent significant roster and thematic reboots.
