X-Factor #31

Published by Marvel Comics in August 1988, X-Factor #31 serves as a pivotal chapter in the Inferno crossover event. Written by Louise Simonson with artwork by Walt Simonson, the issue focuses on the transition of the core X-Men characters as they confront the encroaching demonic influence of Limbo on New York City. This era of the series is noted for the Simonsons' collaborative effort in redefining the stakes for the mutant team, moving them away from their initial premise and deeper into the dark, apocalyptic themes that characterized the late-1980s Marvel landscape.

The visual direction provided by Walt Simonson during this period was influential in establishing the gritty, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the Inferno arc. The cover and interior panels are widely regarded for their cinematic intensity, reflecting a deliberate shift toward more mature, consequential storytelling within the X-Factor title. Critically, the issue is remembered as a cornerstone of the X-Men franchise’s interconnected narrative structure, successfully integrating the personal conflicts of the main cast with the larger, systemic chaos unfolding across the Marvel Universe at the time.
