Where it came from
Published in November 1997, X-Force #72 arrived during a period of transition for the X-Men franchise, following the conclusion of the 'Operation: Zero Tolerance' event. This issue served as a breather for the mutant team, focusing on character-driven narratives as the title shifted toward the more grounded, espionage-inspired tone that characterized the series under the editorial direction of the late 1990s.
The issue features artwork by Jim Cheung, whose clean, dynamic lines helped define the aesthetic of the series during this era. As part of a larger ongoing narrative, the issue was received as a standard installment in the X-Force mythos, contributing to the development of established team members like Cannonball and Siryn while bridging the gap between major company-wide crossovers.
