Where it came from
Published in 1984, X-Men #187 was a pivotal chapter in the long-running Uncanny X-Men series under the stewardship of writer Chris Claremont. During this period, the book was instrumental in evolving the superhero genre by prioritizing dense, character-driven soap opera narratives over standard action tropes, a stylistic choice that cemented Claremont’s two-decade run as a definitive era for Marvel’s mutant franchise.
The interior art for this issue was provided by John Romita Jr., who worked in tandem with inker Dan Green to establish a gritty, atmospheric visual language that defined the mid-1980s X-Men aesthetic. The cover art, illustrated by John Byrne, reflects the high-stakes political and personal drama of the time, depicting the team grappling with the encroaching threats of the government-sanctioned Sentinels and the personal moral compromises inherent in their mission.
