Where it came from
X-Men #71, published in 1971, arrived during a transitional period for the title. Following the conclusion of the original series' initial run, Marvel transitioned the book into a reprint-only format for several years. This specific issue features a cover by Gil Kane and Sal Buscema, serving as a placeholder for a series that had lost its primary creative momentum but remained in circulation for fans of the established lore.
The decision to continue the series through reprints reflected Marvel's strategy of maintaining the X-Men's presence in the marketplace without a dedicated ongoing narrative. While it lacked the creative innovation of the upcoming Chris Claremont era, the issue is remembered by historians of the medium as a bridge between the cancellation of the original Lee and Kirby stories and the eventual relaunch that redefined the team as an international cultural phenomenon.
