Provenance

Where it came from

X-Men #83 was published by Marvel Comics in March 1974 during a period when the title was primarily reprinting older material. By this point in the series' history, the original X-Men title had been effectively relegated to a reprint-only status following the cancellation of new storylines in 1970. This issue features a reprint of X-Men #33, originally published in 1967, which centers on a confrontation between the X-Men and the Juggernaut.

The interior art for the reprinted story was originally illustrated by Werner Roth under the pseudonym Jay Gavin, with pencils by Dan Adkins. These stories were hallmarks of the mid-1960s Marvel style, focusing on high-stakes kinetic action and the internal group dynamics that defined the franchise. While the publication of issue #83 served as a stopgap measure to keep the trademark active, it remains a notable example of the transitional era before the X-Men were successfully relaunched with the All-New, All-Different team in 1975.
