Where it came from
Published in 1987, X-Men Annual #11 features the landmark story 'Lifedeath II,' scripted by Chris Claremont with evocative artwork by Alan Davis. This issue serves as a pivotal character study for Storm, chronicling her journey through the African wilderness after losing her mutant powers. The creative team leaned into a somber, introspective narrative style that contrasted sharply with the high-octane team battles typical of the main series at the time.
The issue is widely regarded by collectors as a high point in the 1980s X-Men canon, celebrated for Davis's detailed line work and Claremont’s ability to ground superhero tropes in psychological depth. It originated during a period of peak creative output for the X-Men line, when annuals were frequently used to explore auxiliary storylines and character arcs that could not be adequately addressed within the constraints of monthly continuity.
