Where it came from
Released in early 1993, X-O Manowar #12 emerged during the height of the Valiant Comics boom. This issue served as a pivotal entry in the series created by Jim Shooter, Bob Layton, and Barry Windsor-Smith, reflecting the gritty, high-concept science fiction aesthetic that defined the Valiant Universe. The story follows Aric of Dacia, a Visigoth warrior bonded to a sentient alien power suit, navigating a modern world while grappling with the technological armor's complex origins.
The interior art for this period was heavily influenced by the house style established by creators like Windsor-Smith, emphasizing detailed line work and visceral storytelling. X-O Manowar was well-received by fans of 1990s independent superhero titles for its departure from traditional tropes, offering a blend of historical fiction and futuristic action. Issue #12, in particular, is remembered for its role in developing the deep lore of the Shanhara armor, solidifying the character's status as a cornerstone of the Valiant roster.
