X-O Manowar #17

X-O Manowar #17 was published by Valiant Comics in 1993 during the height of the independent comic book boom. This issue is a significant installment in the series created by Jim Shooter and Bob Layton, which follows Aric of Dacia, a Visigoth warrior abducted by aliens who bonds with a sentient, power-granting suit of armor. The narrative reflects the darker, more gritty tone that defined the Valiant Universe in the early 1990s, focusing on Aric’s struggle to reconcile his past with his role as a technological crusader in the modern era.

The cover art and interior work for this period of the series are indicative of the house style established by Valiant, which prioritized dynamic storytelling and polished visuals. The design team aimed to balance science fiction spectacle with character-driven drama, appealing to readers who sought an alternative to the established tropes of the major mainstream publishers. The issue is well-regarded by collectors for its role in expanding the lore of the X-O suit and its place within the broader Valiant continuity of the time.
