Where it came from
The 228-2 set, comprised of four 8-stud-wide plates, was released as a basic accessory pack to support the expanding catalog of building systems during the early 1960s. These foundational pieces were designed to provide structural stability and modular connectivity for hobbyists, reflecting the company's shift toward the modern brick-and-plate construction method that remains a hallmark of the system today.
The minimalist aesthetic of these primary-colored plates was a deliberate choice by the design team to ensure compatibility across disparate sets. By focusing on essential dimensions and reliable clutch power, the designers prioritized utility over thematic branding. The release was met with steady demand, serving as a reliable utility item that allowed builders to extend their own architectural layouts and personalize their creations beyond the provided instructions.
