8 Curved Rails Grey 4.5V

The 7851 Curved Rails (4.5V) were introduced by the LEGO Group in 1980 as a core expansion component for their 4.5-volt train system. This era marked a transition in the company's approach to electric trains, moving toward modular track systems that allowed builders to create more complex, realistic layouts beyond simple ovals. The grey plastic rails were designed to be compatible with the specialized sleepers and sleepers-base plates that defined the aesthetic of the 4.5V era, providing the necessary geometry to allow trains to navigate curves.

The design of these rails was straightforward and utilitarian, prioritizing ease of assembly for children. Because they were intended as an add-on pack rather than a flagship set, they were produced in significant quantities to ensure builders could extend their tracks indefinitely. They were generally well-received by hobbyists of the period for their durability and the versatility they added to the burgeoning LEGO railway ecosystem, remaining a staple in collections until the later transition to 9V track systems.
