Where it came from
The LEGO Advent Calendar, set number 1298-1, was released in 1998 as part of the company's holiday-themed offerings. During this era, LEGO sought to expand its seasonal portfolio by providing a buildable countdown to Christmas that deviated from the traditional chocolate-filled calendars popular in European markets. This set was designed to be modular, allowing users to assemble small, thematic constructions each day leading up to the holiday.
The design of the 1998 calendar reflects the classic, simple aesthetics of late 90s LEGO sets, focusing on basic bricks and small-scale builds rather than the elaborate minifigure-driven calendars that would become the standard in later years. The set was received as a functional novelty, aimed at families looking for a tactile, reusable alternative to disposable calendars, and it occupies a significant place in the history of the product line as one of the earlier iterations of this annual tradition.
