Where it came from
The Atlantis Exploration HQ, set 8077-1, was released in 2010 as part of the LEGO Atlantis theme. This line was conceived to capture the allure of underwater exploration and deep-sea mythology, featuring specialized molded elements to create unique creature designs and modular bases. The set was designed to represent a primary research hub, providing a central command structure for the theme's divers to navigate the hazards of the ocean floor and engage with the guardians of the lost city.
The design of the Exploration HQ leans into the aesthetic of high-tech submersibles and aquatic research stations common in science fiction of the era. It features a heavy emphasis on playability, including a detachable submarine and a trapdoor mechanism to simulate the dangers of the setting. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by collectors for its extensive use of rare transparent-neon green pieces and its cohesive integration with the smaller sets in the Atlantis collection, serving as the definitive centerpiece for the narrative.
