Automatic Direction Changer

The Automatic Direction Changer, cataloged as set 157-2, was produced by Lego as part of their early Technic-adjacent accessory line in the late 1970s. Released during a period when the company was expanding its mechanical offerings beyond simple building blocks, this component was designed to allow motorized models to reverse direction automatically upon contact with an obstacle. It represented an early foray into basic automation, providing young builders with a physical mechanism to introduce simple logic and interactivity to their powered creations.

The design reflects the aesthetic of the era, utilizing the classic primary-color palette and robust plastic construction characteristic of late 1970s Danish engineering. It was envisioned as a versatile modular tool that could be integrated into various gear-driven assemblies, reflecting a shift toward 'functional' play that prioritized movement and mechanics. While the specific designer remains uncredited, the piece is regarded by collectors as a significant example of the structural ingenuity that bridged the gap between static construction sets and the sophisticated programmable robotics that would follow in later decades.
