Where it came from
Azog the Defiler (COMCON031-1) was released as an exclusive minifigure during the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. It was designed to celebrate the character's appearance in the first installment of The Hobbit film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson. Produced by LEGO, the figure served as a promotional item for attendees, capitalizing on the high anticipation surrounding the expansion of the Middle-earth cinematic universe into toy form.
The design captures the pale, scarred appearance of the Orc leader, utilizing unique printing to reflect his distinctive character markings. The figure was met with significant interest from adult fans of LEGO and Tolkien enthusiasts alike, quickly becoming a sought-after rarity due to its limited distribution at the convention. It stands as a representative example of the exclusive, event-based marketing strategies employed by the company during that period.
