Where it came from
Released in 2019 as part of the tie-in collection for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Benny's Space Squad serves as both a functional building set and a nostalgic tribute to the classic LEGO Space theme of the 1980s. Designed to capitalize on the fan-favorite character Benny, the set includes four monochromatic spacemen in blue, yellow, pink, and white, complete with authentic vintage-style helmets and air tanks. It was conceived to provide adult fans of the original space line with an accessible, modern recreation of the iconic minifigure designs that helped define the brand's early aesthetic.
The set was received with significant enthusiasm by the collector community, largely due to its commitment to classic design elements that had been largely phased out of modern sets. By faithfully reproducing the retro torso prints and classic smile expressions, the designers successfully bridged the gap between modern building standards and 1980s nostalgia. Its simplicity and inclusion of the rare pink spaceman—previously only available in limited promotional contexts—solidified its status as a quintessential piece for collectors interested in the evolution of theme-based toy design.
