Where it came from
The LEGO Duplo Birthday Building Set, designated 1764-1, was released in the late 1990s as part of the brand's initiative to combine creative construction with celebratory play. Developed during a period when the Duplo range was expanding into themed role-playing scenarios, the set was designed to introduce younger children to the basic concepts of building a cake structure. Its chunky, colorful bricks were intended to facilitate motor skill development while encouraging imaginative party-themed storytelling.
The aesthetic of the set reflects the characteristic minimalist design language of Duplo in the late 20th century, favoring bright primary colors and simple, robust geometries. By focusing on the concept of a buildable birthday cake, the designers sought to create an accessible entry point for toddlers to engage with the LEGO system. Upon its release, it was well-received by parents for its durability and its ability to turn a simple milestone into an interactive educational activity.
