Where it came from
Released in 1988, the Black Knight's Treasure was part of the inaugural wave of the LEGO Castle sub-theme featuring the Black Knights faction. This set represents a period when LEGO transitioned toward more distinct villainous archetypes, moving away from the generic Crusaders and Forestmen to introduce the black-clad knights that became a staple of the late eighties and early nineties play experience.
The set was designed to capture a sense of narrative play, focusing on the defense of a small treasure cache. It features the iconic black horse with red barding and a Black Knight minifigure, showcasing the classic design aesthetics of the era, characterized by limited but bold color palettes and modular environmental pieces that encouraged children to build and expand their own medieval fortifications.
