Where it came from
Released in 1974, the Black Race Car, set 1631-1, represents an early era of LEGO production during a period when the company was expanding its reach into more diverse standalone vehicle models. It was designed as a simple, accessible build that reflected the popular aesthetic of open-wheel racing cars of the early 1970s, prioritizing iconic playability over complex technical functions.
The design utilizes a classic color palette centered on black, accented by red wheels and a transparent windscreen. As part of a series intended to encourage motor-related imaginative play, the set was received as a straightforward entry-level build, capturing the spirit of contemporary automotive design through the limited, versatile brick geometry available at the time.
