Where it came from
The LEGO Duplo set 1861, known as the Box of Bricks, was released in 1983 as part of an expansion of the Duplo product line. These larger, chunky bricks were designed specifically to be compatible with standard LEGO bricks while remaining safe and easy to manipulate for toddlers and preschoolers. The set provided a foundational building experience, offering a simple assortment of primary-colored blocks intended to foster fine motor skills and open-ended creative play.
The design of the 1861 set reflects the era's focus on essential educational toys that encouraged tactile learning. By prioritizing scale and durability, the design team at LEGO aimed to bridge the gap between early childhood developmental toys and the complex construction sets for which the brand is known. Upon its release, the set was well-received by parents and educators alike for its simplicity and the longevity of the plastic material, securing its place as a staple of early childhood playrooms during the 1980s.
