Where it came from
The BRICK KICKS Summer 1990 collection, designated as BK12SUM1990-1, emerged during a period of experimentation within non-traditional hobbyist sets. Released in mid-1990, the series was designed to capture the aesthetic transition between late-eighties pop culture and the burgeoning youth trends of the early nineties. The creators intended to provide a modular experience that prioritized versatility, reflecting the era's focus on vibrant, casual design motifs.
The design process was spearheaded by an internal collective tasked with distancing the brand from its more formal product lines. By utilizing a simplified color palette and distinct structural geometry, the team aimed for an approachable, tactile quality that resonated with hobbyists seeking lighter, seasonal variations. Upon its release, the set was noted for its departure from established tropes, garnering a modest but loyal following among collectors who appreciated the shift toward a more minimalist, thematic approach.
